Q: Could you explain your view of the gap theory?
A: I do not hold to the gap theory for “dinosaur space” nor to accommodate long geological ages or anything else that would be needed to adjust the creation account to fit the theory of evolution. Besides exegetical reasons, my only reason for holding to the gap theory is to deal with the fall of Satan, which certainly occurred before the creation of man. I hold to six literal days of creation, and I begin the first day not with verse 1 but with verse 3 for reasons I presented in my Commentary on Genesis. My view of that period of time does not allow for any physical death of humanity or animals because none of those were created until the six days of creation. What happened in verse 2 and what had happened between verses 1 and 2 preceded the first literal day of creation. So, my view of the gap does not allow for human life to be extinguished before the creation of Adam because there was no such human life at that point in time. I do not believe in the death of any humans prior to the Adamic sin, nor do I need an old earth to accommodate scientific theories, since the gap did not need to be long to begin with.
